April 2018 Board Meeting Minutes

The Jackson County Board of Education met in regular session on April 24, 2018, at 6:00 p.m. at the Central Office.  Members present were Mark Brown, Jeff Lynn, James Childress, Amanda Taylor, Mark Allen, and Marty Woolbright.  The meeting was called to order by Chairman Mark Brown.

 

A motion made by Marty Woolbright, seconded by Mark Allen, approved the following consent agenda:

 

  1. Adopted the agenda
  2. Approved the March 20, 2018 meeting minutes
  3. Approved GP Amendment #3 and Federal Amendment #5
  4. Approved FMLA for the following:
  • Christa Belle Moss (JCMS Teacher-August 1 to September 10, 2018)
  • Paige Locke (JCMS Teacher Assistant-March 19 to April 30, 2018)

 

Motion carried all ayes.

 

            Mrs. Kristy Brown, JCHS Principal, was interviewed by school board members for the position of Director of Schools.  Board members asked Mrs. Brown questions regarding transportation, finance, maintenance, student needs, academic progress, and about her interest in applying for the job.  After careful consideration, a motion was made by James Childress, seconded by Marty Woolbright, to hire Mrs. Kristy Brown as the Director of Schools in Jackson County under a two year contract at the state minimum salary effective November 1, 2018.  Motion carried all ayes.

 

            Discussion of the Shooter Detection System was tabled to the next school board meeting to allow Sheriff Marty Hinson to be in attendance.

 

            A motion made by Amanda Taylor, seconded by Jeff Lynn, approved 0% (none) of State Testing to be used for student grades, in light of the TN Ready on-line state testing problems.  Motion carried all ayes.

 

            A motion made by Marty Woolbright, seconded by Mark Allen, gave permission to the School Nutrition Program to advertise bids for a steamer at JCMS.  Motion carried all ayes.

 

            A motion made by Jeff Lynn, seconded by James Childress, approved Summer School at JCHS contingent on funding and need.  Motion carried all ayes.

 

            A motion was made by James Childress, seconded by Marty Woolbright, to table the discussion of Revisions to Policy 6.200 (Attendance) until the next board meeting.  A committee including the Director, Principals, Parents, Board Members, and Students will be formed to share their thoughts regarding the policy before approval.  Motion carried all ayes.

 

            A motion made by Jeff Lynn, seconded by Mark Allen, approved an overnight trip for JCHS FFA (Envirothon State Contest, May8-9, 2018, Crossville TN).  Motion carried all ayes.

 

            A motion made by Mark Allen, seconded by Marty Woolbright, approved a JCMS Cheerleading fundraiser (8th Grade Promotion Dance).  Motion carried all ayes.

 

            A motion made by Jeff Lynn, seconded by Marty Woolbright, approved early dismissal of schools at 12:00 p.m. for the annual Poke Sallet Festival Friday, May 11, 2018.  Motion carried all ayes.

 

            Director Joe Barlow gave updates on projects and principals gave updates on school activities and events.

 

            A motion made by James Childress, seconded by Mark Allen, approved the following Director’s Report:

 

  • Accepted resignation letter from Hazel Lancaster (Substitute Custodian)
  • Accepted resignation letter from Meredith Asbury (JCMS Teacher)
  • Hired Sara Norris-Robbins (Part-time at JCHS for 21st Century)
  • Approved Randy Maynard (Substitute Bus Driver)
  • Approved LaShanna Martinez (Substitute Kitchen)

 

Motion carries all ayes.

 

            The next school board meeting was scheduled for Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. at the Central Office.

           

      A motion made by Jeff Lynn, seconded by Amanda Taylor, adjourned the meeting.  Motion carried all ayes.
